About Me

Stephen C. Rose

Welcome to my online website! Being born and raised in Toronto, Ontario Canada and having a family cottage in Muskoka has given me the opportunity to experience a wide range of topography, from the stunning views of the Niagara Escarpment to the vast and rugged beauty of the Canadian Shield throughout the Muskoka Region.

I became seriously interested in visual art through various forms including Watercolour Painting, Pen & Ink and Wood Carving. Studying Interior Design/Architecture at college and university has given me an eye for detail that allows me to bring my artistic visions to life. Choosing colours for my next Watercolour Painting, hand sculpting a commissioned one-of-a-kind decorative wood bowl or carving detailed elements on a custom hiking staff are challenges that I eagerly take on.

I consider myself a self-taught artist and am continually taking courses in Watercolour, Pen & Ink and carving to strengthen my techniques.

Muskoka is where I get my inspiration for my artwork. My subjects that I seek are unique and different but always inspired by nature. I most often work with Watercolour, Pen & Ink and Pencil. I love Watercolour for the immediacy and fluidity it involves, but Pen & Ink allows me to indulge in drawing with the attention to detail that I have always loved to do. Watercolour Pencil gives me great control for washes and layering effects. Most often all three media are used to complete the final painting. I carry a camera with me when hiking or on the water and often use the resulting photos as reference.

Hand sculpting decorative wood bowls is always a challenge because I have to think three-dimensionally before I start shaping each piece. I have to be aware of grain patterns and the natural colourization of the wood to take full advantage of its features or working with the shape that the wood gives me results in a one-of-a-kind piece. Adding decorative carving techniques to my sculpted bowls gives more visual interest.

Carving hiking staffs is really a lot of fun because my clients have free rein as to what they would like to see on them (names, dates, uniquely shaped stones, anything really) or I will create some interesting features for them (faces, eyes etc.). Hiking staffs are custom made with a leather hand grip, lanyard and protective interchangeable tip at the end of the staff to prevent ware.
I am an active member of Visual Arts Mississauga and a member of the OWCA (Ontario Wood Carvers Association). I participate in the Annual Members Show & Sale at Visual Arts Mississauga and have received several awards for my carvings from competitions throughout Ontario.

“I want the viewer to connect to what I see whether through a memory or emotion which for me is the ultimate reward or to have a unique hand sculpted wood bowl or custom made hiking staff that will be a cherished family heirloom or conversation piece.”
