Shadows of the Elm
I was given a digital photo of an Elm tree taken by my sister in law a couple of years ago from Aliston Ontario. I was inspired to do this piece because of the sharp shadow lines cast onto the tree by the late fall afternoon sunlight. The watercolour background was a light wash of blue & background foliage was the wet on wet technique. To ground the tree in the foreground the wet on wet technique was used & the stylus used to show wild grasses. The trunks & limbs of the tree have various light washes. Pen & ink work (wavy lines) created the bark texture & heavy ink work shows the sharp shadows on the trunks & limbs of the tree.
